Nick & Charlie

Nick & Charlie

This piece celebrates the essence of youth, adventure, and hope for the future. Do any of your students like the Heartstopper characters Nick Nelson and Charlie Spring? Here's a charming piano solo inspired by Alice Oseman's webcomic series and Netflix adaptation that brings the characters together! Using each letter from their names, two distinct melody lines were created as a musical cryptogram. Both themes are simple. I wanted the piece to capture the optimism and personalities of the characters. With a light-hearted pop feel and syncopated rhythms, this solo can appeal to tweens, teens, and adults.

Musical interpretation can be explored with performance directions of "hopeful," "happily," and "relaxed.” Guided questions like, “How would the characters feel in this passage?” or “What else can represent these two melodies?” can encourage storytelling and imagination. Phrases are 4-8 measures long, which helps with easy pattern and form recognition.
Total performance time: 4:35.
