A trembling effect that is achieved by playing rapidly repeating notes in succession. 

Tremolo

A series of any amount or quality of blocked 6th intervals that are played in one hand and move up or down in primarily 16th note rhythms.

16th Note Parallel 6ths

The use of notes not in the prevailing mode or diatonic scale of a piece.

Chromaticism

Notes whose lengths are equal to one-sixteenth the value of a whole note or one quarter of a quarter note.

16th Notes

An indication instructing the player to play very softly; softer than piano.

Pianissimo

An indication instructing the player to play loudly.

Forte

An Italian term meaning "delaying"; an indication instructing the player to decrease speed, often gradually.

Ritardando

Indications placed above or below notes instructing the player to hold those notes longer than their original notated length.

Fermatas

Also called the damper pedal, it is the rightmost pedal on the piano and used to sustain notes by moving the dampers away from the strings.

Sustain Pedal

Sharps, flats and naturals that do not appear in a key signature.

Accidentals

A type of accompaniment pattern that uses a persistent 16th note rhythm with broken chords, in varying note configurations.

16th Note Broken Chord Accompaniment

A series of notes played in both hands, one at a time while alternating with each other, using predominantly 16th note rhythms.

16th Note Alternating Hands

Notes whose lengths are equal to half the value of one sixteenth note.

32nd Notes

Leaps greater than an octave that are to be executed at a fast speed and in succession. 

Rapid Leaps

An accompaniment pattern where the hand regularly moves distances greater than an octave to play a series of blocked chords.
