Theodor Oesten

A type of accompaniment pattern that uses a persistent 8th note rhythm with a low-high-middle-high note configuration.

8th Note Alberti Bass Accompaniment

Sharps, flats and naturals that do not appear in a key signature.

Accidentals

Sometimes called upbeats or pickup notes; a note or series of notes that precede and give stress to the first downbeat of a piece.

Anacrusis

A type of accompaniment pattern that primarily uses major and minor triads with simple or slow-moving rhythms.

Blocked Chord Accompaniment

Indications instructing the player to play gradually louder (crescendo) or softer (diminuendo).

Crescendo and Diminuendo

A type of articulation indicating the player to play smoothly and seamlessly, with the notes slightly overlapped.

Legato

Commonly used diatonic scales with the following sequence of intervals: whole, whole, half, whole, whole, whole, half.

Major Scales

A type of articulation indicating the player to play short and light; notes not held for their full value.

Staccato

Hand positions that require stretching beyond a five finger scale; usually to play intervals that are 6ths or greater.

Extended Hand Positions

Chords with alternate ordering of their tones where the root is placed either in the middle or at the top of the chord.

Chord Inversions

A technique that requires the player to pick up and move their hand to a new position; usually from a five finger scale to another.

Shifting Hand Positions

Silence that equals the length of one 8th note.

8th Rests

Silence that equals the length of one quarter note.

Quarter Rests

Notes whose lengths are equal to one-fourth the value of a whole note.

Quarter Notes

Notes whose lengths are equal to one-eighth the value of a whole note or half the value of a quarter note.

8th Notes

The physical motion of crossing fingers 2, 3, 4, or 5 over the thumb; used when playing scalar passages or outside of five finger scales.

Crossing Over Thumb

The physical motion of crossing the thumb under fingers 2, 3, 4, or 5; used when playing scalar passages or outside of five finger scales.

Crossing Thumb Under

Passages with constant step-wise motion and mainly 8th note rhythmic values.

8th Note Scale Passages

A sign placed in front of a note that raises its pitch by a half step.

Sharp

A sign placed in front of a note that lowers its pitch by a half step.

Flat

Quarter notes whose lengths are increased by half; equal to three 8th notes.

Dotted Quarter Notes

Notes whose lengths are equal to one half the value of a whole note.

Half Notes

Indications instructing the player to put special emphasis on notes.

Accents

A sign that tells the player to play gradually louder.

Crescendo

A sign that tells the player to play gradually softer.

Diminuendo

An indication instructing the player to play loudly.

Forte

An indication instructing the player to play softly.
