Blocked Root-5th-Octave Accompaniment

Two notes played together, usually in one hand but sometimes in both, whose distance is the interval of a octave.

Blocked Octaves

8th notes whose lengths are increased by half; equal to three 16th notes.

Dotted 8th Notes

Playing chords while simultaneously bringing out and phrasing one of the notes as a melody.

Chord Voicing

A series of any amount or quality of blocked 3rd intervals that are played in one hand, and where both notes move up or down in parallel motion.

Parallel 3rds

Ornamentations that are notated in a smaller size than normal notes and played slightly before them.

Grace Notes

A series of blocked octaves that are played one hand at a time and where both notes move up or down in parallel motion.

Parallel Octaves

A series of blocked octaves that are played one hand at a time and where additional notes of different qualities are added in between the octaves.

Parallel Octaves with Inner Notes

Notes whose lengths are equal to one-sixteenth the value of a whole note or one quarter of a quarter note.

16th Notes

A series of parallel octaves played simultaneously in both hands.

Double Octaves

Sharps, flats and naturals that do not appear in a key signature.

Accidentals

An ornament consisting of a rapid alternation between two adjacent notes, either a semitone or whole tone apart.

Trills

Also called the damper pedal, it is the rightmost pedal on the piano and used to sustain notes by moving the dampers away from the strings.

Sustain Pedal

Intervals and chords played in one hand that require significant stretching between at least two notes and where the outer intervals reach further than an octave.

Large Hand Stretches

Chords played with four notes (including seventh chords) that usually require stretching beyond a five finger position.

Four Note Chords

Notes that are either raised or lowered by two semitones.

Double Accidentals

An accompaniment pattern where the hand regularly moves distances greater than an octave to play a series of broken chords.

Broken Chord Accompaniment With Leaps

Notes whose lengths are equal to one-eighth the value of a whole note or half the value of a quarter note.
