Chromaticism

A series of blocked octaves that are played one hand at a time and where both notes move up or down in parallel motion.

Parallel Octaves

Hand positions that require stretching beyond a five finger scale; usually to play intervals that are 6ths or greater.

Extended Hand Positions

An accompaniment pattern where the hand regularly moves distances greater than an octave to play a series of broken chords.

Broken Chord Accompaniment With Leaps

Also called the damper pedal, it is the rightmost pedal on the piano and used to sustain notes by moving the dampers away from the strings.

Sustain Pedal

A technique that involves quickly shifting hands beyond an octave.

Leaps Greater Than an Octave

When one hand plays above or below the other for an extended period of time, often used alongside Hand Crossing.

Hand on Top of Hand

Chord tones played together that are not part of an accompaniment pattern.

Blocked Chords

A series of blocked octaves that are played one hand at a time and where additional notes of different qualities are added in between the octaves.

Parallel Octaves with Inner Notes

A series of any amount or quality of blocked 3rd intervals that are played in one hand and move up or down in primarily 8th note rhythms.

8th Note Parallel 3rds

Intervals and chords played in one hand that require significant stretching between at least two notes and where the outer intervals reach further than an octave.

Large Hand Stretches

Indications instructing the player to play with sudden emphasis.

Sforzando

Notes whose lengths are equal to one-eighth the value of a whole note or half the value of a quarter note.

8th Notes

Chords played with four notes (including seventh chords) that usually require stretching beyond a five finger position.

Four Note Chords

Two notes connected together smoothly where the second note is played softer and lighter.

Two Note Slurs

A scale comprised of only semitones which uses all 12 notes.

Chromatic Scale

A series of parallel octaves played simultaneously in both hands.

Double Octaves

Notes whose lengths are equal to half the value of one sixteenth note.

32nd Notes

Broken chords that have a minimum range of an octave and require thumb crossing.
