Hazel Kinscella

Hazel Kinscella was born in Nora Springs, Iowa in 1893. She studied piano with Raphael Joseffry in New York and earned a B.M. and A.M. from the University School of Music in Lincoln, Nebraska, a B.F.A. from the University of Nebraska, an A.M. from Columbia University, and a Ph.D. from the University of Washington. Kinscella taught as a professor of music at multiple universities, published over 100 professional articles, authored a six-book piano pedagogy series entitled Music Appreciation Readers as well as Music on the Air, a 500-page reference for radio music listeners. Her method of teaching piano in public schools became known as the Kinscella method and is still used today.
