Frederic Flaxington Harker was born in Scotland. In 1901, George Washington Vanderbilt, grandson of Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt, arranged to have Harker emigrate to the United States to serve as organist for St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Richmond, VA. Two years later, in 1916, he became the first Director of Music at the University of Richmond where he established the College Glee Club and expanded the music curriculum.
Harker composed several cantatas, anthems, choruses, songs, and works for piano and organ. As an active music editor for G. Schirmer, one of the leading music publishers, Harker helped shape the repertoire available to American musicians.
